Split Old or young, whichever way you like it, Split's history dates back less than 1700 years. The city grew out of the Palace of Emperor Diocletian who ruled in the 4th century and who, having retired from Rome, decided to build himself a palace here. Today, lovingly cared for by its citizens, the palace continues to live and thrive, maintaining the unbroken, 1700-year-long line. This is very likely why this structure has been on the UNESCO list of world heritage since 1979 - being regarded as the best preserved example of imperial palace architecture dating from the period of Antiquity. There is no other such edifice in Split, either before or after Diocletian's Palace, which has managed to preserve its original elements to such a degree.
Split is the largest town in Dalmatia and its cultural, economic and tourist centre, with six museums, three picture galleries and a theatre.
It is also the venue of a number of cultural and sports events.
For those who wish to combine business with pleasure, the ambiance of the city together with the comfort and requirements of the business community, the hotels and halls of Split are inarguably the correct choice.
